The arts portfolio guide

A practical guide to organising original work, process material, and an artist statement.

The requirement

A body of work, with context.

The senior arts portfolio carries 1 credit and includes original artwork, process sketches, revisions, and an artist statement explaining themes and techniques. Students present it to faculty alongside the senior research project. Artistic development, reflection, and clarity form part of the assessment.

This guide offers organisational prompts. Confirm the required submission format, dates, and any subject-specific expectations with faculty before preparing the final portfolio.

Build as you work

Keep the evidence of change.

01

Organise the material

Group original pieces, sketches, revisions, and notes so you can locate them easily. A simple record of dates, working titles, and changes can help you reconstruct how an idea developed.

02

Look across the work

Identify recurring questions or themes. Notice where a piece adds a different perspective and where two pieces repeat the same idea. Explain your selection instead of assuming the connection will be obvious.

03

Draft the artist statement

Describe the themes, techniques, and choices that matter to the collection. Refer to specific pieces and revisions. Use clear language that helps a viewer understand your work.

04

Prepare to present

Practise explaining a starting point, a decision, a revision, and a result. Make sure you can distinguish what you intended from what changed through the process.

A final self-review

Questions to ask yourself.

Is the work clearly my own?

Check that the collection presents your original work and that any references or influences are handled according to faculty expectations.

Can someone follow the development?

Select sketches and revisions that make a meaningful change visible. More material is not automatically more informative.

Does the statement help the viewer?

Connect the writing to the actual pieces. Explain a theme or technique using a specific example rather than relying on general claims.

Have I confirmed the submission arrangements?

Check formats, dates, presentation expectations, and how the work should be delivered with faculty.
